We’ve always known that The Hunger Games has a huge fanbase in the country and we have expected it to be a blockbuster hit. But now, it’s confirmed!
The Hunger Games opened to 1.71M US Dollars or roughly Php 73M in the country which we e have been told is #1 in Asia and we have the numbers to prove it!
In the Philippines, where the “Twilight” franchise is especially popular, “The Hunger Games” opened to $1.71 million. In Singapore, it took $1.38 million, in Taiwan it took $1.36 million, in Hong Kong it took $709,000, in Malaysia it took $655,000 and in Thailand it took $649,000.
Deadline.com also reported:
In the UAE $656K and the Gulf region with almost $1M combined.

Aside from the loyal Hunger Games fans, there are also lots of non-fans who went to see The Hunger Games and most of them have positive feedback! We have been getting reports that a lot of them started reading the trilogy!
Furthermore, The Hunger Games has been getting good reviews from the local media. For example, Philip Ortiz Dy of ClicktheCity.com gave an impressive rating of 4 out 5 stars and referred to the movie as “by far, one of the most intriguing properties I’ve seen developed for mainstream cinema.”
Mario Hernando of The Philippine Star also gave an in-depth review of The Hunger Games! More than that, he gave a very interesting perspective to The Hunger Games:
“In the long run, what The Hunger Games is driving at is the dark, horrible prospect of governments, big business, and yes, reality TV running our lives and disposing of them, and creating dog-eat-dog situations. Just prospects? Big Brother and ruthless Survivors are already daily fare on highly-commercialistic reality TV. Though for the time being bloodless, the Hunger Games are a reality.
Paul Daza of Spot.ph gave also an impressive 4.5 out of 5 spots for The Hunger Games! To quote:
“The Hunger Games is big-screen entertainment at its crowd-pleasing, voyeuristic best. Whether or not you’ve read the books, it’s safe to say that you’ll come out of the movie feeling that your P170 was well spent.”
Filipino Hunger Games fans are just amazing and the support that they give is just beyond great. But, biases aside (?), we are also thankful that The Hunger Games is just a great material to begin with! ;)
Indeed, the Philippines is watching and the odds are in our favor!
Not only The Hunger Games opened #1 in the box office, the Hunger Games is RECORD BREAKING!
Lionsgate’s record-shattering The Hunger Games opened with $68.25M grosses for Friday’s North American box office, including $19.75M in record-setting midnights. That should make for a first weekend of $140M with upside. This is the highest non-sequel opening weekend ever, and the highest debut single day for a non-sequel ever, and the highest March opening ever, and the 5th highest opening day ever. Adding to the great reviews around the globe, domestic audiences gave The Hunger Games an ‘A’ Cinemascore with under-age 18 teens/tweens rating it ‘A+’, an indication of their extreme satisfaction with the movie beyond all the marketing and media hype.
Also, we have been informed that Philppines is doing better than Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore in the box office!
Yes, Philippines is indeed watching!
“Young Filipino fan re-writes ‘Hunger Games’ - literally and word-for-word - on illustration board”
Kia Alampay, a 13 year old grade school student, showed her love for The Hunger Games by re-writing the ENTIRE book (THG) word-for-word on a piece of illustration board! Yes, all 370 pages, at least 100,00 words!
She finished it in time for the opening of the movie (and took her three months to finish it) and presented it to her best friend, Monique Espiritu, as a graduation gift.
We’ve always known that Filipino HG fans are amazing, but Kia gave a whole new definition and she raised the bar on how to become a real hardcore HG Fan!
We would love to talk to Kia! So, Kia or Kia’s friend, send us an email! or tweet us! ;)
