A Collective Manifesto: The Stand of Hunger Games Philippines on RA10175 or Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012
One of the social issues presented in The Hunger Games trilogy is non existence of freedom of expression in its fictional nation-Panem- due to the strict censorship by its fictional government: The Capitol. It is our deepest fear that this supposedly fictional issue has become a reality for us Filipinos.
On September 12, the Philippines saw Benigno Aquino III signing into law RA10175 more popularly known as Cybercrime Law of 2012. The law in itself has outstanding provisions that will overwhelmingly aid Filipino netizens in these modern times: the fight against online pornography, hacking, spamming, and identity theft. But one provision has put the bill into bad light and has been the discussion of outraged and concerned citizens since then: cyber libel.
The provision, which was inserted by Senator Vicente Sotto III and signed into law by Benigno Aquino III, is not only unconstitutional as it curtails freedom of expression but also transgresses and defies Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) with the current criminal libel clause.
By criminalizing cyber libel, it is a clear indication that the government is infringing the right of the Filipinos to express their thoughts wholly and fully in an avenue that was created to serve the purpose it is now blocking: the internet.
Hunger Games Philippines is not for the total repeal of the law as it has good merits on its own, but we call for the IMMEDIATE AMENDMENT OF THE CYBER LIBEL PROVISION. We are courageously standing up the senators who voted for the passage of this bill and the Philippine president who signed this into law and tell them that we will not tolerate and accept such inhumane provision, and failure to amend or repeal the said provision will result in disapproval and loss of confidence with the current administration.
We are calling the attention of the Supreme Court, and ask the magistrates to render the cyber libel provision unconstitutional.
Most of all, we call the attention of all the FILIPINO NETIZENS. Do not just sit there, have your voices be heard outside the four corners of your update box. This is OUR right they are taking away. Do not be afraid. Like the districts of Panem who rebelled against the Capitol for its oppressive government, the Filipino people will also stand up to this hideous cyber libel provision. We will not hold and bite our tongues; we will let the government know we are against it
You’ve read the books, watched the film, and if you’re as obsessed with Hunger Games as I am, you most probably have already purchased all related merchandise that you are able to buy! A great addition to one’s Hunger Games collection would be the recently released Hunger Games DVD and Blu-ray sets! Last August 25, 2012, to launch the Hunger Games DVD/Blu-ray/VCD, C-interactive Digital Entertainment along with Astroplus held the Catch Hunger Games Fever event at the SM Megamall event center.

I was fortunate enough to purchase the 2-Disc Special edition DVD of the Hunger Games enclosed in a Limited Edition Functional Cube with a officially licensed Mockingjay pendant! (Yes, you’ve read that right, A MOCKINGJAY PENDANT!) I opted for this particular DVD set since I was fascinated with how well the packaging (functional cube) was executed. Disc 1 of the set is the feature film itself while Disc 2 includes extra footage of the film comprising of behind the scenes clips, interviews with the production team, director (Gary Ross), the cast and many more that provides an in-depth look into how the film came to be.
The featurette “Game Maker: Suzanne Collins and The Hunger Games Phenomenon” primarily tackles how instantaneously the Hunger Games appealed not only to young readers but also showcases how it was able to encompass boundaries and cater to a wider audience.
The second featurette “The World Is Watching: Making The Hunger Games”, is comprised of an 8 part documentary that offers a deconstructed view of the film. I particularly enjoyed how Gary Ross emphasized on the importance of shooting the film not from the point of view of the Capitol but from the point of view of the heroine, Katniss Everdeen. This just proves that he truly understood the importance of this film being a critique of the Capitol; and in parallel, a critique of our society (since the violence in the book and in the film are rooted in how our society functions today).
Albeit there wasn’t any gag reel / blooper footage included in the dvd extras, there are a multitude of embedded behind the scenes footage in this featurette that are bound to make you laugh!
The other clips include: a) an extensive discussion between Donald Sutherland (President Snow) and Gary Ross on the rose garden scene is included in the “Letters from the Rose Garden” featurette; b) a definite feast for the eyes is offered by “Controlling the Games” ( a closer look at the special effects used in the film, specifically the arena); c) an additional interview with the director of the film in “A Conversation with Gary Ross and Elvis Mitchell”; and d) additional promotional material (The propaganda film used by the Capitol and an archive of posters).
Over all I’d say that this DVD set was definitely not a disappointment! If you want to delve deeper into the world of the Hunger Games, I highly recommend that you buy this DVD or better yet, the Blu-Ray since it contains additional features.

CONFIRMED: Liam Hemsworth is the newest endorser of Bench!
Philippine Star reports/confirms that Liam Hemsworth is the new endorser of Bench.
Bench boss Ben Chan was in L.A. last week to finalize the contract with Liam and supervise the pictorial for the Bench posters and billboards.
Bench announced days ago that they have a new endorser but they didn’t reveal the identity. Instead, they had been tweeting clues as to who it might be. As of yesterday, it was already clear to most of us, that it is indeed Liam. Luckily, the odds are in our favor and we are right! Now let’s hope that Bench will also bring Liam here in Manila for a Meet and greet!
Bench has also announced that his billboards will be revealed this weekend around Metro Manila. (Send us photos if ever you’ll spot one!)
(Bench/ is a leading Philippine clothing brand and is known to have international celebrities as endorsers such as Joe Jonas, Lucy Hale of Pretty Little Liars, Bruno Mars, Michael Trevino of The Vampire Diaries, David Archuleta and more.)
UPDATE: Here’s a photo of the Bench newspaper ad (Philippine Star) feat. Liam!
We’ll post more photos of the Bench ads as soon as we get them. You can also spot his billboard along EDSA
UPDATE: His billboards along EDSA Guadalupe, (yes there are 4!)
